About Hoops IQ

Helping players think the game at a higher level.

Hoops IQ uses detailed film breakdown to help basketball players understand decision making, spacing, and real-game situations that often go unnoticed during live play.

About Tristan Filby

Hi, I'm Tristan Filby.

I’ve spent over 30 years involved in basketball as both a player and coach at the District and Representative levels in South Australia.

During that time I’ve coached a wide range of boys and girls teams, from U10 through to U18, helping players develop the skills and understanding needed to compete at higher levels of the game.

I’ve been fortunate to be part of many successful teams, including multiple championship seasons and two State Championship titles. I was also honoured to receive Coach of the Year at the Sturt Sabres, recognition that reflects the collective effort of the players and teams I’ve worked with.

Throughout my coaching journey I’ve also had the opportunity to continue learning from the game by attending coaching clinics and development programs led by coaches and trainers from both the National Basketball Association and the National Basketball League.

These experiences have helped shape my approach to player development and understanding the modern game.

But beyond results, my biggest focus has always been helping players improve and develop a deeper understanding of basketball.

Why Hoops IQ Was Created

Most basketball training focuses heavily on skills in isolation — shooting drills, ball handling, and athletic development.

While those are important, games are often decided by something deeper:

Decision making.

Knowing:

  • when to shoot

  • when to attack

  • when to move the ball

  • how to read spacing and defensive rotations

These are the things that separate good players from impactful players.

Hoops IQ was created to help players see the game more clearly through detailed film breakdowns that highlight the moments most players miss while they’re in the middle of the action.

The Hoops IQ Philosophy

At Hoops IQ, the goal isn’t just to point out mistakes.

It’s to help players understand the game.

Through film breakdowns, players can slow the game down and learn:

  • how decisions affect the offense

  • how spacing creates opportunities

  • how to recognise defensive advantages

  • how small details influence winning basketball

When players begin to understand these concepts, their confidence, awareness, and overall impact on the court improves.

Player Development Philosophy

At Hoops IQ, film breakdowns are designed to be constructive, educational, and encouraging.

The goal is never to criticise players or focus on mistakes, but instead to help them recognise opportunities to improve their understanding of the game.

Each breakdown focuses on teaching players:

  • how to make better decisions in real game situations

  • how to read spacing and defensive movement

  • how small adjustments can create better scoring opportunities

Basketball is a fast-paced and complex game, and young players rarely get the chance to slow the game down and see what’s really happening.

Film allows players to pause the moment, understand the situation, and learn how to approach similar moments better in the future.

Hoops IQ aims to create an environment where players feel supported, motivated, and excited to keep improving their game.

Development Through Film

Film study is one of the most powerful learning tools used at higher levels of basketball.

Professional teams, college programs, and elite development environments regularly use film breakdown to help players understand the game beyond what can be seen during live play.

Hoops IQ brings that same learning approach to developing players by breaking down real game situations and highlighting the decisions, spacing, and opportunities that shape the outcome of each possession.

By slowing the game down and analysing key moments, players gain insights that help them improve their basketball IQ, awareness, and decision making on the court.

The Mission

The mission of Hoops IQ is simple:

Help players understand and think the game at a higher level.

By combining years of coaching experience with detailed film analysis, Hoops IQ aims to give players the kind of insight normally reserved for higher levels of basketball.

Because the more a player understands the game…

the better they play it.

Hoops IQ is based in South Australia and works with players across multiple levels of youth basketball.
